Rare Disease Day – February 28, 2025
Each year on the last day of February, communities around the world come together to recognize Rare Disease Day, raising awareness and understanding of the more than 300 million people living with a rare condition worldwide.
This global observance—first held in 2008 and coordinated by EURORDIS (Rare Diseases Europe)—aims to improve access to diagnosis, treatment, and support for individuals and families affected by rare diseases. More than 100 countries now participate in this growing movement, hosting events, educational programs, and landmark light-ups to amplify the message of unity and inclusion.
February is known as the “rarest month,” making it the perfect time to spotlight those facing rare conditions and to advocate for equitable healthcare, research, and social support.
The zebra has become the international symbol of rare diseases – a reminder to think beyond the ordinary and consider the rare. Just as no two zebras share the same stripes, every person living with a rare disease has a unique story and journey.
