Dermatology Nurses' Association Convention Focuses on Patient Outcomes
PITMAN, NJ - The Dermatology Nurses' Association's (DNA) 21st Annual Convention will be held in San Francisco, CA, on March 20-23, 2003 at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero. The conference theme, "Evidence-Based Practice: Bridging the Gap to Improve Patient Outcomes," reflects the new challenges for nurses as they strive for optimal patient care. As there continues to be an increase in technologic advances, nurses will continue to be the primary link between families and doctors.
Program
The conference offers a wide variety of sessions on dermatologic and professional topics at all levels, from basic to advanced. The keynote speaker, Amy Deutschendorf, MSN, RN, AOCN, with over 30 years experience in advanced nursing practice, is a renowned speaker, author, and consultant. She will open the conference on Friday, March 21, by challenging the audience to focus on how evidence-based medicine can be applied to nursing practice.
There will be several preconference workshops, including the "Biologic Administration Education Program for Psoriasis," which will provide attendees with the tools necessary to educate and manage psoriasis patients who are treated with biologic therapy. Barbara Bielan, BSN, RN, ANPC, a nurse practitioner, will host an interactive "What's Your Assessment?" session in which participants bring slides of a skin lesion, and then join as a group to formulate a differential diagnosis. A new "Advanced Practice Forum" is being offered to all nurse practitioners and will include special sessions designed specifically to meet the challenges of diagnosis and management of skin disease. A hands-on postconference education activity, "Facial Rejuvenation with Botulinum A," will focus on the history, chemical makeup, and possible side effects of the drug. Other session topics include drug interaction management, ethical issues, skin concerns for women, melanoma, and occupational skin disease.
The Dermatology Nurse Certification Exam will be offered on Saturday, March 22. Pre-registration is required for the exam.
Continuing Education
Attendees will have the opportunity to earn a minimum of 17.8 contact hours. Additional contact hours will be given for the six preconference workshops and special education activities, ranging from 2.4 to 8.2 contact hours for each session.
