Dermatology Nurses' Association Holds Successful Summer Meeting in New York City

Pitman, NJ – Sounding the drumbeat for sun protection and skin health, almost 300 dermatology nurses and other health care professionals convened August 4-5 at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City for the Dermatology Nurses' Association (DNA) Summer Meeting.

DNA offered a host of education events throughout the meeting, including a Skin Cancer Workshop on Sunday, August 5. The popular session, attended by 190 people, featured the latest information on melanoma, skin lesions, the effects of UV radiation, and novel treatments. Panel members included sun protection advocate Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, MSN, RN; WABC-TV New York anchor Michelle Charlesworth who has been treated for skin cancer; and other experts in dermatology, law, health education and research.

Along with educating nurses and other providers, public education was another goal of DNA's officials. Maguire-Eisen and DNA President-Elect Karrie Fairbrother, BSN, CDE, DNC, appeared on a WABC news segment Saturday morning with Charlesworth, showing graphic photos of the skin damage caused by the sun. They also demonstrated the proper use of sunscreen and other protective methods. Fairbrother, Maguire-Eisen, DNA President Susan Tofte, MS, RN, FNP-C, and other DNA representatives educated the Naked Cowboy, a colorful Times Square personality, about sun protection.

To further spread the sun safety message to the general public, DNA, Coolibar, Neutrogena Corporation, and the Marriott Marquis provided 2,000 “SunAware” bookmarks and Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF 55, to guests staying at the hotel. The bookmark includes tips about spotting skin cancer and skin cancer prevention.

In addition to skin cancer education, the conference featured a broad slate of topics spanning the dermatology specialty. These included phototherapy; dermatology nursing basics; and dermatologic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Hilary Baldwin, MD, vice chair and associate professor, Department of Dermatology, State University of New York in Brooklyn, presented a luncheon symposium on acne that was very well received by attendees for its up-to-the-minute research.

Conference participants also earned continuing nursing education credit and networked with their colleagues during the weekend meeting. Among the special events was a reception on Saturday, August 4, during which 12 corporate sponsors displayed the latest information and technologies.

In addition to the Summer Meeting, DNA also holds an annual convention. Next year, the 26th Annual Convention will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas, NV, March 27-30, 2008.
