Dermatology Nurses' Association Convention Draws Record Crowd
PITMAN, NJ - Over 1,000 nurses attended the Dermatology Nurses' Association (DNA) 21st Annual Convention in San Francisco, CA, on March 20-23, marking the best attendance in DNA's history.
Convention attendees enjoyed an exhibit hall filled with 95 booths, as well as a wide variety of special events, networking opportunities, and top-quality education sessions. The sessions, which were taught by nationally known experts, included such topics as skin cancer treatments, drug interaction management, ethical issues, skin concerns for women, melanoma, occupational skin disease, cosmetic surgery, and more.
"This was DNA's best convention ever. Attendance reached a record-breaking high and the exhibit hall was sold out," said DNA Executive Director, Cyndee Nowicki. "DNA corporate members were once again very supportive of the convention, sponsoring numerous breakfast, lunch, and dinner symposia."
The conference theme was "Evidence-Based Practice: Bridging the Gap to Improve Patient Outcomes," which reflected the new challenges for nurses as they strive for optimal patient care. Consistent with this theme, the keynote speaker, Amy Deutschendorf, MSN, RN, AOCN, opened the conference by challenging the audience to focus on the ways evidence-based medicine can be applied to nursing practice.
There were several preconference workshops, including the "Biologic Administration Education Program for Psoriasis," which provided attendees with the tools necessary to educate and manage patients with psoriasis who are treated with the new biologic therapies. Barbara Bielan, BSN, RN, ANPC, a nurse practitioner, hosted an interactive "What's Your Assessment?" session in which participants brought their own slides of a skin lesion and then joined as a group to formulate a differential diagnosis. A hands-on postconference education activity, "Facial Rejuvenation with Botulinum A," focused on the history, chemical makeup, and possible side-effects of the drug.
