TRENTON — The state Senate overwhelmingly approved a measure today that would ban the use of commercial tanning beds by anyone under the age of 17.
The bill (S1172), which was approved by a vote of 29-2, has been amended several times since its introduction. As now written, the measure would also prohibit children under 14 from applying spray tan in salons and require parents to participate in an initial consultation before their teenagers began any tanning sessions.
When first introduced, the measure called for barring the use of tanning salons by anyone under 18, but legislators amended the measure to allow those 15 and older to use the facilities after salon owners said such a stringent law could put them out of business. Read the full story here.
